SVG CORNER

SemioSys SVG Tree Widget demo is here
SVG sleek fragrance is floating around.

SVG is likely to replace Flash within a few years.

It has features Flash is lacking and most of all, it's an W3 XML dialect, which means it is non prioprietary, normalized and can be automatically generated both on client and server sides.

In addition, it marries well with ECMA scripting (Javascript) to produce a rich palette of animations and creative features.

Adobe has release a plug-in (for Windows, Mac and Linux (beta)) that can be found here. Adobe has an impressive showcase for SVG. A very good thing is that Adobe SVG Viewer integrated a conformant implentation of ECMA script, which is not exactly the case with IExplorer and Netscape implementations. Still, it is possible to choose the browser's own ECMA engine if necessary, But the Adobe ECMA engine garantees the same behavior an MacOS, Window and Linux.

An interesting thing is the use of SVG to build actual GUI, that would be integrated in web applications. Could we expect to see something in SVG similar to Swing in Java, namely a full widget set ?

Peter Sorotokin (from Adobe) has release a few month ago a prototype for a UI. It shows that SVG for GUI has a future for sure. However this is a bit premature since, according to him, some features are lacking :

Actually, judging from the SVGOpen conference,SVG UI idea is just "in the air". There are a lot of experiments going on in this area. I think that most people agree though, that SVG needs some special new features for SVG UI to become truly reusable and scalable (i.e.support for custom element definitions). Before this is done, developing full-blown UI toolkit is IMHO premature (...).
